One of my all-time favourite musicians, Brian Eno, famously devised a deck of cards inscribed with suggestions for those times when himself and other musicians reached creative impasses, the Oblique Strategies cards.

I’m fairly convinced that British politicians use a very similar deck of cards….

Cool news that the great Neko Case has a new album forthcoming. It’s been way too long. And cooler still, said album apparently features Neko covering her kinda namesake. “Afraid” is one of Nico’s most lovely compositions and I’m excited to hear Ms. Case’s take on it … Until then, here’s a rare live rendition performed sometime in the 80s, I’m guessing?

“What Goes On” - The Velvet Underground, Arena Parco Nord, Bologna, Spain, July 6, 1993

It’s been 20 years since Lou, John, Sterling and Moe got it back together for an all-too-brief European reunion tour. Not sure if the live album that resulted is held in particularly high esteem, but it’s got its moments — Cale singing “All Tomorrow’s Parties,” the viola/guitar duels on “Hey Mr. Rain,” Morrison’s sterling solo on “Rock and Roll,” and of course the unbeatable Moe Tucker beat throughout. Lou’s vocals are really the weak link, when you get right down to it. A whole lotta bellowing going on. But here’s something cool — a tune that didn’t end up on the official live album. In fact, I think they only played it once or twice during the tour. But it fits like a glove. Reed and Morrison trade solos like the old days and Cale and Tucker lay down an unshakeable rhythm. (The only thing missing is a Cale organ solo; Sterling always said that “What Goes On” was at its best with Cale’s keyboards. There’s no recording of that, so we’ll just take his word for it…) Even though the tour ended in general acrimony, the reunited VU sound like they’re having fun: “Go, Sterl!” Lou hollers encouragingly at the start of the ever-chooglin’ instrumental break. The recording isn’t great, but hey, if you’ve listened to any VU boots from the 1960s, you’ve listened to much worse.
